Manü Cherlias, Hobby-Extreme-Biker is someone, that has tested the Planai-Downhill course to the extreme, he says: „Downhill is to be compared with the Super G style of racing from ski sport. Its all about finding the best possible racing line to get from the summit of the mountain down to the finish line with the fastest possible time. The major difference for us is that the narrow race track is winding down the mountain through the trees and forest!
From start to finish one must ride over radical bumps, passages with pertruding tree roots, rocky cliffs and even jumps of over 20 metres! An unimaginable challenge for rider and equipment!
The pro's make use of specially designed mountain bikes to tackle such challenges. The correct technique and experience for eg. jumping technique, and other required skills that are needed by downhill riders are often learned through BMX or in dirt parks.
My personal best record time on the Planai stands at 4 Min. 30 - last years winner, Samuel Hill from Australia dominates the 2,1 km course with an average speed of about 33 km/h (!!!) to produce an unimaginable time of 3 Min. 50. The best viewing points are naturally located near the most spectacular parts of the course.
Everybody that wants has the chance over the whole summer to beat their own personal best time on the Planai. Or to experience the undescribable feeling of flying over a downhill jump, challenge the rocks and bumps or just to be part of the „I made it down club“. „Give me 5-alive!“
